The global organization for wrestling, United World Wrestling (UWW), has expressed strong condemnation over the arrest and detention of wrestlers during a recent protest march, issuing a warning of potential suspension if the situation is not addressed promptly.

India's top wrestlers, including renowned athletes like Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat, had gathered to protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused of sexually harassing and mistreating female competitors. The wrestlers had planned to immerse their medals in the Ganga as a symbolic gesture to press charges against Singh.

UWW has closely monitored the situation in India, expressing deep concern over the allegations of abuse and harassment. They have called for additional information about the upcoming elective general assembly from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Ad-hoc Committee of WFI. The initial 45-day timeframe for holding the electoral assembly needs to be adhered to, failing which the federation might face suspension, resulting in athletes competing under a neutral flag. This echoes the previous response by UWW when they relocated the Asian Championship, originally scheduled to take place in New Delhi.

During the recent protest march to the new Parliament building, the wrestlers were halted and detained by Delhi Police, raising further concerns about their treatment and the overall situation. The authorities also cleared the area where the wrestlers had been protesting for over a month, leading UWW to strongly object to their incarceration and demand a thorough and impartial investigation into the claims.

UWW has pledged to meet with the wrestlers to ensure their well-being and safety while offering unwavering support for a fair and just resolution of the issues at hand. The global wrestling body stands firm in its stance against any mistreatment of athletes and seeks a comprehensive resolution to the matter.
