United Nations Leaders Issue Urgent Call for Ceasefire in Gaza Conflict

The United Nations leaders have issued a rare joint appeal for a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict. The heads of 18 United Nations agencies have called for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, expressing "astonishment and horror" at the increasing deaths in the conflict.

"A humanitarian ceasefire is desperately needed." It's been 30 days now. "Enough is enough," declared the world's leaders in a rare united declaration on Sunday. "It should stop now."

United Nations leaders, including UNICEF, UN Women, the World Food Programme, and the World Health Organization, had described the killings on both sides in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians as "horrific" in the past month.

According to officials in Hamas-controlled areas, at least 9,770 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israel's bombardment of Gaza.

According to Israeli officials, over 1,400 people were killed, primarily civilians, in Hamas attacks on southern Israel on October 7th.

The United Nations leaders stated, "For almost a month, the world has been watching the escalating situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, with a growing number of casualties and a surge in shock and horror."

The United Nations leaders called on all parties to "respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law," including safeguarding fundamental civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and schools, and allowing assistance in Gaza. They described it as "unacceptable" that the population of Gaza is being deprived of essential goods and services and that there are bombings on their homes, shelters, hospitals, and places of worship.

They went on to state, "Over 100 attacks against health care have been reported." "A large number of humanitarian workers, including 88 UNRWA staff members, have been killed since October 7th - the largest number in any single conflict in the United Nations so far."

The United Nations leaders also condemned the killing of dozens of aid workers.
